Baseball Divisions & Age Chart

All Divisions of Baseball at South Wall Little League are structured to provide the best opportunity for the children to learn and most importantly have fun!

Tee-Ball

Ages:  4 – 5 :

Field:  Field #2

  • Safety Baseball used (softer than regular baseball).
  • Recommended for all 1st year players between the ages of 4 – 5.
  • Players are taught the fundamentals of catching, throwing, and hitting.
  • All players field and bat each inning.
  • There are no outs; players advance 1 base at a time.
  • A tee will be used for batting.
  • Halfway through the season, 1 inning of “Coach Pitch” can be introduced at the coach’s discretion.
  • There will remain “no outs” during coach pitch, and if a child struggles, a tee should be used.
  • Typically, 3 innings games are played.

Rookie 6

Ages:  5 - 6

Field:  Field #1

  • Safety Baseball used (softer than regular baseball)
  • Recommended for:
    • 5 years with ability to hit coach pitching and have played in T-Ball for at least one season.
    • All 6 year olds.
    • 7 year olds that are either just starting out or are not yet comfortable with using a regulation baseball.
  • Focus on fundamentals, catching, throwing and hitting as well as the introduction of fielding and base running.
  • Focus on putting the ball in play and teaching situational awareness.
  • This level incorporates 3 outs per inning (or batting one time through the order if 3 outs can't be accrued).
  • Includes advancement beyond first base if the ball is hit into the outfield.
  • 4 innings coach pitch; a tee is used as necessary.

Pioneer

Ages:  7 – 8

Field:  #7 (46/60)

  • Regulation baseball is used.
  • Recommended for:
    • 7 year olds that have already played 1 Spring season of Rookie 6 or are ready for the next level of baseball.
    • 8 year olds that are not yet comfortable to play in the Minors.
  • Focus on core fundamentals as well as the next level of fielding and base running.
  • Players may advance at will on a ball in play, with the exception of an overthrow by the fielder.
  • Play on a regulation Little League size field with a focus on better understanding of the game and making the right decisions on a ball in play.
  • Max 5 runs per inning.
  • 6 inning game (time permitting) with 2 innings of Coach Pitch; 2 innings of Kid Pitch and 2 innings of Coach Pitch.
  • Teams are formed by the Pioneer Commissioner with oversight from the SWLL Player Agent.  The goal of this league is to introduce competitive baseball with evenly matched teams.  Requests to play with friends or for a specific coach are difficult to honor at this age level.

Minor

Ages:  9 – 10 (* 8's see notes)

Field:  #8 (46/60)

  • All 9 & 10 year old players will play at the Minor level.
  • 8 year olds are welcome to be evaluated to play up at the Minors level.
    • League discretion will be based on the number of players and teams formed as well as the child’s ability.
  • 6 innings games (time permitting).
  • All innings are kid pitch.
  • Minors is a competitive division with standings kept, playoffs, and a league champion crowned.
  • Minors includes in-season games vs North Wall LL that could be played @ North Wall LL.
  • Certified Little League umpires officiate all games.
  • Teams are drafted by the Managers (with oversight from the Minors Commissioner and the SWLL Player Agent) with the goal of having a fair, competitive league.  Therefore, requests to play with friends or for a specific coach are not an option at this level.
  • 9 and 10 year old All Star teams are selected via blind vote.  The Manager and 1 assistant coach from each team participate in an in-person voting process led by the SWLL Player Agent.

Major

Ages:  11 – 12 (* 10's see notes)

Field:  #3 (46/60)

  • All 11 – 12 year old players will play at the Major level.
  • 10 year olds are welcome to be evaluated to play at the Majors level.
    • League discretion will be based on the number of players and teams formed as well as the child’s ability.
  • 6 inning games (time permitting)
  • All innings are kid pitch.
  • Majors is a competitive division with standings kept, playoffs, and a league champion crowned.
  • Majors includes in-season games vs North Wall LL that could be played @ North Wall LL.

Ages:  13 – 15

Field:  #5 (60/90 field)

  • All 13 – 15 year old players will play at the Junior level.
  • In-season games are likely to include other local Little Leagues, though travel proximity is close (North Wall, Tri-Shore, Howell, etc.)

Senior

Ages:  15 – 16

Field:  #5 (60/90 field)

  • All 15 – 16 year old players will play at the Senior level.
